Don't reduce your professional relationships to the transaction.

See people for who they are. They have their own desires and struggles. They enjoy being valued and appreciated. They enjoy being more than a number that walks through the door or a potential check in the waiting. I know not many of us would acknowledge that we do this...

But it's true. For everyone at one point or another.

But what does the broader theme of your professional interactions say? Are you someone who values the person or just wants the transaction?

Even patients desire for their doctors to create an experience that sees them more as a person. They don't want to wait far beyond their appointed time (because respectfully, they are a person). They want professional advice, but it would be nice if it was delivered warmly or with compassion. They enjoy accessibility when they have big questions. If you've watched 'Patch Adams', you may have appreciated a doctor who attempting to see them for who they are. (By the way, I think this industry has made significant leaps in their efforts...)

So, how are you creating an environment for your customer to be seen for something far more valuable than a potential transaction? If you are in a high volume type environment, how can you implement small touch points of humanity that are authentic, though brief?

Intentional thoughts about your approach go a long way. Ultimately, this requires a deeper shift of perspective. A choice that you will value them as a person first and foremost, regardless whether you get something out of it or not.

...and that will go a long way.

Keep building,

Eric
