It seems like everything has been shaken.

It's as if our neatly organized deck of cards resembling the familiar routines of our lives were tossed straight up in the air and we've spent the last bit, trying to reorganize them.

But things have changed, as they always do; and at times (like this..), it is more pronounced than others.

In one way, the uncertainty seems to have resulted in a reshuffle amongst the workforce. A professional assortment of musical chairs.

us enough?

As business owners and impactful managers, what is within your control? What do your current employees desire? When they dream of their own lives, where do they want to go (professionally or otherwise)? What are their frustrations? What are the individual difficulties that obstruct the successful completion of the task at hand?

Are you curious enough to know? Intentional in your search?

No one would blame you if not. You're certainly busy enough to justify the interruption.

But individually, not being heard comes at a cost. You likely have felt it yourself at times in your life or career.

Act

We can pursue collective business results AND use our influence, processes and structure to lead well individually. (Simplistically, an employee in sales may desire to train. Sales goals may not change, BUT you can partner with them to identify scenarios in which they can hone their training skills and/or build that network.)

Lack of awareness of our employees' ever-changing desires is costly. You might find yourself as a surprising participant in the Great Resignation.

As leaders, we attempt to consider challenges on the horizon (competitive or otherwise). We want to proactively navigate them. Our minds easily navigate to areas, such as supply chain concerns. But we too often ignore similar consideration with our most prize worthy investment: our people. They are changing. Their hearts may carry frustrations or desires that you do not understand. For their sake and yours, it's important to connect and know them.

Good things ahead,

Eric
